Hernan Montenegro was born and raised in Santiago, Chile where he graduated from the Escuela de Ballet del Teatro Municipal de Santiago. At the age of 16, he won a silver medal at the Lima International Ballet Competition where he was also given a contract with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. Here, Hernan spent nearly five years dancing as principal dancer and had the opportunity to perform in many famous ballets such as Don Quixote, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Laurencia, Coppelia, Nutcracker, Pentimento, Firebird, La Bayadere, Sleeping Beauty and many other important ballets choreographed by Vicente Nebrada, Vladimir Issaev, Yanis Piquieris, and Petipa. He was also a teacher for ages ranging from 4 to 18 for Vladimir Issaev’s School of Classical Ballet.
In 2016, Hernan began dancing with Ballet de Santiago as a Corps de Ballet member. In his time there, he danced several soloist and principal roles in ballets such as Raymonda, Firebird, The Magic Flute, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Onegin, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Cinderella and many others. He has performed almost every classic choreographed by John Cranko as well as the choreographies of Maurice Bejart, Jaime Pinto, Peter Schaufuss, Luis Ortigoza, Marcia Haydee, George Balanchine, Glenn Tetley, and Eduardo Yedro. He has travelled internationally to attend multiple festivals and tours in Peru, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and Poland. Hernan is now a professional guest artist and teacher here in the United States and resides in Roanoke, Virginia with his girlfriend. He is excited to be performing with Virginia National Ballet in 2020-21.
